SLLU... Second Life's Conscience

By Plot Tracer

Back in 2006, as a member of a left unity party that had until that time had worked well since 1999, after a conversation with another member of the party (Scottish Socialist Party), I took a dive into Second Life and took a look around. After a group search using various political terms, I saw that quite a few small left groups existed inworld. One small Socialist Group had a small, unused, meeting room, and from there, I sent messages out to hundreds of individual avatars, and group messages asking if anyone would like to meet and talk about creating a left unity group. I can't remember how many replies I had…  but they ranged from supportive, but not interested, to outright opposition as 'this sort of left unity would water down' whatever 'one true analysis' the person was affiliated to.

{SLLU hit real world headlines, when it organised and facilitated the mass protests against the Front National

But, two people agreed to meet and discuss a way forward. Higgledipiggle Snoats (Higs) and Dick Marellan…  and so SLLU was born.

I can't stress enough how incredible Higs contribution was, both politically and creatively. Higs and I worked almost tirelessly through the night on projects and on building SLLU for nearly three years. And others then became involved, taking the group in many, many directions.

{Unity Station... Our HQ

I've always thought of SLLU partly as a training platform. I mean, some people whose first act of activism is sticking a pixel sign to an avie, have gone on to protest and stand up for rights in rl. All of what we tried to do in sl had rl application /effect. One of the first things we did in 2006 was open up a piece of land for people to create a "peace camp" tent where they could create links to rl issues. Even our Front National protests were about ensuring the media knew about what was happening. We spent long hours during those few months writing press releases, being interviewed, contacting new press and digital media press and magazines, about the protest, and our concerns, demands (at one stage i was just getting four hours sleep a night, working on that and working in my rl profession during the day!)

Subsequent stuff, like the Italian IBM strike (an invasion of an IBM Italy organised Global CEO meeting by hundreds of protesting Union avies that led to IBM's italian CEO resigning) and the fund raising for RAWA were all rl based, but mobilising inworld activists and people who until those points, had no idea they were activists!

We did other  inworld stuff that had no outside implications... Eg,. Protesting LL TOS, in order to teach activists about real world implications , history (history of enclosures, capitalism, privacy issues, etc)

I also thought of SLLU as being a bridge to activism for people who might not be able to be active in rl for whatever reason (disability, isolation, mobility, mental health amongst other reasons) . A group from which people could be active from their desktop, laptop. SLLU came along before a lot of the online petition sites etc, and we offered people a place where they could, in solidarity with others, shout truth to power. That's also true of another project I founded, Leftungagged.org, some of those podcasting and/or writing do so from their bedrooms, wheelchairs etc and some are autistic, anxious, time poor... Helping to draft letters of protest for folk, and asking for the power of many voices to sign those letters, can make a real difference to people's lives. The power of numbers... Real Solidarity.

And moreso, we allowed activists to take the lead using skills they had or wanted to cultivate, after group discussions, rather than taking a top down approach (many of the inworld political groups mirrored rl political group structures... Which in my opinion  are at times questionable, and in the anarchic world of sl, just hamper creativity)...

Is SLLU worth revitalising? I think so. Activist groups exist in SL, but they are reliant on one or two people funding them…  or at least being involved in order for others to feel confident enough to give money to keep them in expensive sims and parcels. SLLU is a place for all brands of left activists to come together in common cause.

The fact that a number of people have come together to re-envisage and reboot SLLU after a message from a Linden saying our parcels were about to be seized speak volumes about SLLU's power and durability after all of these years when so many of the groups started in SL in the naughties have dissipated. A group were people with left political principles across the left spectrum can never truly disappear. A group with a conscience.

We may not at present have the numbers we once had,  but like the time when Higs, Dick Marellan and I came together in 2006, it just takes a small, determined group of people to work together to morph a Second Life into RL revolution!

The future of SLLU

Im not sure how many people read this any longer. Probably none. SLLU was a huge hug of a thing. Something that, in a cold, sometimes angry digital world, brought people together who wanted the world to be different. A world no longer based on Romano /Wall Street /Imperialist injustices.

And we made a difference on many occasions, from giving fascists a pasting, through to organising a real life strike and superb feminist actions.

And now we are at a real crossroads. Do we let the organisation die, or do we look at building SLLU 2.0...

Please contact me via email if you are interested in taking part in the discussion.

Reconvening SL Left Unity

I propose we reconvene SL Left Unity for two reasons.

1 to share any real life / online activity we have been organising or taking part in to fight back against corporative austerity.

2 to organise coordinated worldwide SL / RL activity to inspire, acknowledge or spark a fightback against corporate austerity.

Comrades- in the West, the owner/corporate class are winning the class war. We need to fight smart and crack their system wide open.

If you are interested in getting together inworld, email me at plottracer@googlemail.com

SL Left Unity - We can see the future!

...and it is bright, comrades. ... and it is contained within the SLLU Charter and Aims and Principles.

One of my favourites among an orchard of cherries, is the first of the Aims and Principles.

"1.1 The group offers the means of a left environment, the term Unity does not claim anything since there is no monopoly. It is a proposition."

We are a MEANS OF A LEFT ENVIRONMENT. There is no monopoly. We are a space and a forum for the left to plan, meet, have fun, discuss, build and educate each other. If you are an activist and need space to do any of these things, contact me inworld or email plottracer@googlemail.com

Punk rocks the Red Star Bar!

Since the late 70s punk has been a voice of dissent in much of the developed world. This Sunday DJ Milton, accompanied by Kookie the chatterbox, brought their punk-to-go show "dick sandwich" to the Red Star Bar. They nearly crashed the SIM!

Next one - LATE JULY! (not July 3rd as previously stated)

SL Left Unity - a place for Left discussion...

SLLU is about discussion and finding common ground. Discussions go on all of the time in IM and on our parcels.

Today I spoke with Agnes Sharple. I asked her permission to publish some of our conversation, as I think it illustrates SLLU and it’s purpose very well. (I have also kept a small part about Amnesty International in SL in this chatlog- please read it if you are in an Amnesty group in SL!)

Agnes Sharple: "that’s why I find it good to have diversity and disagreements in SLLU, people can learn that we don’t necessarily have to agree, but we still respect each other"
These are our personal views and not the views of the group as a whole.

[2011/03/17 02:06] Plot Tracer: Hi Agnes - some people have complained that notices are being sent out as SLLU poionts of view when they are individuals point of view (for example the No fly Zone stuff - there are different views in our Left Unity group). When you are posting such stuff, could you make sure it is clear that it is your view and not necessarily the view of SLLU? Thanks comrade!

[02:54 AM] Agnes Sharple: Hi Plot. Of course. Sorry. I was thinking of that after i posted it, i should have said something like "this might interest some of you" or something

[02:54 AM] Plot Tracer: no problem! It is just that some people said that “this is not my view."

[02:55 AM] Agnes Sharple: well, we do not expect everyone in this group to agree with everyone, do we? Its a unity :)
[02:55 AM] Plot Tracer: yes :)
[02:55 AM] Plot Tracer: i will worry when people agree on everything...
[02:55 AM] Plot Tracer: :)
[02:56 AM] Agnes Sharple: :)

[02:57 AM] Agnes Sharple: that said, i am not comfortable with very aggressive ppl in this group and ppl spelling death threats and such, fighting against fascists, being quite fascist themselves. Get my drift?
[02:58 AM] Plot Tracer: yes
[02:58 AM] Plot Tracer: i agree

Plot Tracer: "Education - and immersion in discussion and experience of discourse and action in sl is all part of this educational experience- this is why some of us began the group SLLU"
[03:00 AM] Plot Tracer: though my experience is that these types of people mellow with more exposure to other peoples views. I have seen some activists grow. One I know started in SL about 4 years ago and was an armchair fanatic... but with exposure to other views and talks and discussions and - years - he has become a rl activist with good *evidence based* views
[03:00 AM] Plot Tracer: this happens again and again.
[03:01 AM] Plot Tracer: though there are people who will never *change much*.... but it is good they have their own groups - and will learn how to react in a unity group.

[03:04 AM] Agnes Sharple: Yep, that’s why I find it good to have diversity and disagreements in SLLU, people can learn that we don’t necessarily have to agree, but we still respect each other

[03:04 AM] Plot Tracer: yes
[03:05 AM] Plot Tracer: this is perhaps the most important lesson in sl left unity. the 8th of our aims and principles says ---“ SLLU firmly stand for the bringing of international cooperation and awareness through education and the discussion of the issues raised by capitalist hegemony which the RL mainstream media systematically fail to report. SLLU believe that by avoiding authoritarian teacher- pupil models of education and based on peoples actual experiences and continued shared investigation, every human being, no matter how impoverished or illiterate, can develop a new awareness of self which will free them to be more than passive objects responding to uncontrollable change. As Freire said, and SLLU agree, each individual wins back the right to say his or own word - to name the world.”

[03:06 AM] Agnes Sharple: exactly

[03:06 AM] Plot Tracer: Education - and immersion in discussion and experience of discourse and action in sl is all part of this educational experience

[03:07 AM] Plot Tracer: this is why some of us began the group SLLU
[03:08 AM] Plot Tracer: I think there is a place for the demonstrations and the expression of unreasonable views as well - because people then realise there are counter views which are as valid. They learn then, how to strengthen their views with evidence and then how to express them reasonably

[03:09 AM] Agnes Sharple: this is why i like the group, its not some small (minded) group where everyone have to agree with the founder of group

[03:09 AM] Plot Tracer: yes
[03:10 AM] Plot Tracer: though it was difficult to make people realise this. When we first started people *assumed* we were some sort of stalinist pre-1989 eastern European style group!

[03:10 AM] Agnes Sharple: hahah
[03:11 AM] Agnes Sharple: ppl "assume" a lot in SL, jumping to conclusions without getting the information

[03:11 AM] Plot Tracer: yes
[03:12 AM] Agnes Sharple: not only in SL..
[03:12 AM] Plot Tracer: true!

[03:13 AM] Agnes Sharple: but I’ve seen a lot of it in sl, maybe because of language issues
[03:13 AM] Plot Tracer: perhaps - and because a lot of communication is quickly typed...

Amnesty International (E)

[03:13 AM] Plot Tracer: Oh
[03:14 AM] Plot Tracer: by the way - I see you are in Amnesty international (SL) -
[03:14 AM] Plot Tracer: this group is not the real amnesty group
[03:14 AM] Agnes Sharple: no?
[03:14 AM] Plot Tracer: it was set up by someone who asked for donations and then left sl with lots of money

[03:14 AM] Agnes Sharple: wtf
[03:14 AM] Plot Tracer: the real one is the other one in my profile

[03:14 AM] Plot Tracer: Amnesty (E)

[03:14 AM] Agnes Sharple: i left
[03:14 AM] Agnes Sharple: now
[03:15 AM] Plot Tracer: cool. join the other one
[03:15 AM] Agnes Sharple: oh okey

[03:15 AM] Agnes Sharple: 'you are in that group too?
[03:15 AM] Plot Tracer: Millay Freschi set it up - she is running it on behalf of the real Amnesty
[03:15 AM] Plot Tracer: yes - i am in it to tell people it's history. When i notice people are in it, i tell them.
[03:16 AM] Plot Tracer: i send out im's sometimes as well.
[03:16 AM] Agnes Sharple: ic:)
[03:16 AM] Agnes Sharple: thank you
[03:17 AM] Plot Tracer: np :)

On SL Marxists; Networks and Platforms

by Plot Tracer

I haven’t written on this blog for quite some time, and indeed I haven’t been involved in SL for quite some time; flitting in and out to read notices and update viewers etc. but have always been keeping up to date with what is going on in the group. Firstly I want to put something straight.

The Charter and Aims and Principles entitled “For friend and foe alike” on our blog is NOT the most up to date one – it was mistakenly copied from an earlier version. The most up to date version is BELOW. The version that was agreed in 2008 was the forth incarnation. Slight tweaking of our “constitution” took place over the preceding period.

A source of pride has been the continuance of SLLU work through the SLLU Feminist Network. This group of people, who share an idea of left feminism, but not a rigid blueprint to feminism or of what feminism should be, have been an inspiration. They have been organising events, meetings, websites, information hubs and demonstrations and have been a huge part of other events and places and activism throughout the huge SL world. They are, and we are, a small group in a huge world, but a group who have influence from one end of SL to another (In the second ever post on this site, Bob Marley was quoted, and how true this is of our group - "If you are a big tree, we are a small axe."

The second thing that has impressed me in the past few months is the new “platform” within SLLU – SL Marxists (I will come back to the differences between platforms and networks in a while). Some of the people in SL Marxists have been on a political journey not unlike my own when I first came into SL. When I arrived in SL in 2006 there were a plethora of left wing groups – SL Socialist, communist, Leninist, Trotskyite and Marxist groups – all of whom rarely spoke to each other and none of whom got together for joint work. As a member of a real life left unity project, I thought I would try to get representatives from all of these groups together and come up with some sort of “hub” group – a group we could all use to plan and talk about projects we could work on side by side. I used the existing group’s IM facilities and membership lists to contact people to meet in the old SL Socialists building on Bora Bora. Two people turned up - Higgledpiggle Snoats and Dick Marellan and within our first or second meeting, we created SLLU (after a debate about it’s name! – SLLU could well have been SLUL!). Within weeks we had set up SLLU’s first HQ on a Scottish themed sim and membership rose relatively quickly. We set up the blog and rented a couple more premises on different sims, and people began to come to our meetings.

We formed a committee and issued invitations to others to join – and join they did!

Shortly after our formation, one of our new French members, Laura Gagliano told us that the French Front National had organised in SL for the French elections – setting up an HQ and recruiting “shop”. I went along and found that there was only one avatar sitting outside the Front National building with a placard. We sent the word out that we were organising demonstrations against them and more people turned up. We then sent out press releases to press organisations across the worlds both SL and RL, and both the demonstrations and SLLU took off!

Our membership at one point was over 700. It was agreed that every year we cull members because of inactivity for more than two years as it is preferable to know exactly how many active Second Lifers are in the group. We are at present 500 strong.

Why do I compare this journey to that of SL Marxists? Well, the fact is that the fight against Front National, and how big it became (at the time it has to be remembered that SL was still zeitgeisty and we hit major Television news channels and news papers across the globe) honed the committee and how we interacted, and it was the experience during the massive fight against Front National, with a cast of thousands, that informed our Charter and Aims and Principles. We very quickly, and “on the hoof,” came to decisions that have formed the basis of how SLLU conducts itself and is now “organised.” Consensus and a loose organisation were seen as essential. (I cannot understate, by the way, the work carried out by Higgledpiggle Snoats in this. She is a sadly missed founding member). SLLU FemNet have taken this further with their organisation and meetings structure. Within FemNet, there are people who agree on some things and disagree on others, but consensus is the key, not a creation of oppressed minority within the group through shouting loudly or voting to keep others views out of the mix. Listening is the key. FemNet is a true network – feminists from across the left with no “line” coming together with genuine intent to find consensus.

Where SL Marxists differ, is that they have an agreed a line – a minority one within the wider left, but a valid one nonetheless.

Back in the early days of SLLU, it was agreed that people could affiliate as an “affinity group.” This never really happened more or less because it was based on the RL anarchist system that had worked well from Seattle through to G8, Scotland in 2005 and onwards. What we found was that this didn’t translate to SL so well. We looked at how other political Unity groups worked and it was agreed we encourage people to affiliate either a full operating group, like SL Socialists (which never happened as it died) or create groups that could become platforms or networks within SLLU.

This was what was agreed back in 2007 (and was enacted only when SLLU FemNet and SLLU LGBTI were created much later).

Platforms

1 Members have the right to organise in Platforms or Tendencies. The SLLU, as a pluralist group, recognises that a range of political points of view is a healthy source of debate and new ideas.

2 All Platforms/Tendencies should be open – their constitution and aims & objectives should be brought to the attention of the wider group.
3 Platforms/Tendencies have a right to be heard, to organise meetings, to produce literature and to distribute materials at SLLU meetings.
4 Platforms/Tendencies are not expected, however, to organise public campaigns against the overall aims or policy of the SLLU.

Networks

1 Members can organise in Networks.

2 (a)Networks can be set up to encourage the self organisation of members of SLLU who suffer from specific discrimination and to enable them to organise collectively in campaigns against oppression and to take a lead in the wider group on these issues.

(b) Networks can also be set up to bring together members of SLLU interested in campaigning on a specific issue. Such networks can help to bring together members who are active in campaigns in order to intervene more effectively, coordinate activity, promote the group and feedback
experience into the party.

To sum that up, Networks tend to be based around identity politics (youth, women, feminism, Black, LGBTIQ) and platforms are traditionally sub-parties which have a specific left anti-capitalist stance (eg. Marxist; Marxist-Leninist; Anarchist etc). They are autonomous, but use SLLU to find consensus and share experiences with the SL Anti-capitalist left and indeed the anti-capitalist left across the world.

RL Left anti-capitalist political parties can also be part of SLLU by affiliating as a platform. However, those who claim to be representing a real political party must prove this as difficulties have sprung up in the past when enthusiastic members of RL groups have affiliated and then the RL group has disowned what they have claimed!

Oh – I also want to add, people do-not have to be a member of a network or tendency or platform or working group to be a member of SL Left Unity. Some prefer not to be identified as any of these things – or some – or all!

SL Left Unity is a hub for all who agree with our Charter and Aims and Principles. The work carried out by SL Marxists during the Egyptian protests has been superb – and inclusive. The work they did during the wikileaks demos was also exemplar – they ensured they did not upset the Swedish owner of the sim they wanted to demonstrate on and indeed, condemned the griefing of another left group. For their hard work and proven want to help build a non-sectarian left unity hub in the spirit of the SLLU during the defining months of late 2006/early 2007 I welcome them as a platform.

Letter from Plot Tracer to SLLU

(Please see the post below this letter for meeting details)

I am heartened to see the re-commencement of meetings of the Left Unity project, Second Life Left Unity.

The Aims and Principles of SLLU state – “The group offers the means of a left environment, the term Unity does not claim anything since there is no monopoly. It is a proposition.” – and I feel the honourable history of SLLU has met that aim. Many people from different aspects of the left have used SLLU to rally many others to causes we can all unite on. SLLU has proved time and time again NOT to be a sectarian, evangelical left sect – and has been a welcoming space for the left of different hues.

The aims and principles state, “The SLLU stands for the transformation of society. To replace capitalism with an alternative classless, stateless economic system based on collaborative democratic ownership and control of the key sectors of the Second Life (SL) economy. A system based on physical freedom; artistic freedom and environmental protection rather than private profit and promotion of Real-Life mass produced corporate products.”

This aim is fundamental to the use of virtual environments to be used as freely as possible without exploitation. The recent disappearance of the SLLU shop is a real pity – it was a resource under used and under publicised. Having said that – the use of the physical spaces owned by SLLU by SLLU members for agitation, publicity for issues etc is second to none. Voices usually silenced or filtered by the mainstream media have managed to be heard – and this has led from SL through to the mainstream media, as we have seen in the past with fights against fascist groups such as the French Front National; union battles such as the fight in Italy against vicious IBM bosses and the recent Greek uprisings and Palestinian solidarity demos.

Virtual worlds offer a place to experiment with alternative – fair - economies and social systems. Second Life does not do this, with its tier system of rights according to ability to pay. SLLU has offered space for left artists to express themselves free of charge (for example in the garden for the victims of capitalism and the camp we set up for people to create their own expressions of protest against the capitalists system). In giving voice to those who are usually silenced, SLLU has been meeting its third aim – “The SLLU will provide political support and solidarity to all those who are involved in fighting back against injustice, whether it be trade unionists, community organisations, tenants groups, anti nuclear protesters, animal rights campaigners, anti racist organisations, feminists, anti-war groups, mental health advocacy groups, LGBTI rights organisations and other campaigns and protest movements.”

I won’t patronise members by going through the rest of the aims and principles of the group, they are here for all to see. These aims and principles were created back in 2005/06 by a group of people from diverse backgrounds in real life – some members of real life political/ activist groups, and some who were from none. The aims and principles have been tweaked and improved upon over the years through democratic discussion.
No individual can claim to be SLLU – SLLU is made up of people across the world united by these aims and principles.

The recent call for new meetings by Smoke Wijaya is exactly the way SLLU can be re-ignited – SLLU does not go away much as in countries across the world, left unity is important in order to challenge the current hegemony. In times of crisis, such as that affecting the world at the moment, were workers conditions are attacked by those who control the financial cogs and wheels, the anti-capitalist left MUST unite.

Although unable to attend the meetings for the next few weeks (personal circumstances has stemmed by second life- I WILL be back – and look forward to meeting my SL friends again soon), I hope they go well. I will remind people, that all that was achieved by SLLU was started when three people met and decided to build a left unity project. Dick Marellan, Higgledpiggle Snoats and myself created a space for the left to meet and plan installations. The original idea was to create a space where lefties could share their real life experiences and have a welcoming space in which to express them. SLLU took off in a way none of us could have imagined.

SLLU, as a place for lefties to meet without hierarchy, is vital. The left groups in SL usually have a structure, even though this structure may be informal – there usually is a “leader” - a core activist plugging away at sometimes single issues, or a multitude of issues.

I would suggest that those activists (even if the initial numbers are small) who do attend meetings should contact as many left groups as possible, and show them our aims and principles and invite them along to share their experiences and perhaps a synthesis can be reached of common action and activity.

SL needs SLLU- and those who meet must ensure people from across the grid come together without prejudice.

ATTACK ON SCOTTISH MEDIA

This is from the Scottish Socialist Party. Union de-recognition is being rolled out faster across the country - faster than Thatcher could have even dreamed of. This is during the tenure of the "Labour Party" - which is now under the leadership of someone who has been selling himself as "left wing" for years and years (Blair never had to "spin" that lie - he likened himself to Thatcher etc)

Article for discussion

That this comes from a former Treasury worker makes this interesting reading.

A Free Press or a Ministry of Truth?

By Paul Craig Roberts
In his novel 1984, George Orwell portrayed a future time in which the explanations of recent events and earlier history are continually changed to meet Big Brother’s latest purpose. Previous explanations disappear down “the memory hole.”

Sound familiar? Any American who pays attention can observe the identical phenomenon occurring in the US today.

Think about the Bush Rfegime’s changing explanations for the failed US occupation of Iraq. Shortly after Bush’s May 2003 announcement of “mission accomplished,” the mission revealed itself to be very much unaccomplished. Americans were told that the cause of the snafu was a small Sunni insurgency of two or three thousand at the most inspired by “die-hard Baath party remnants.” Remember the propagandistic deck of cards identifying the most wanted down to the less wanted? Americans were assured that once Saddam Hussein and his relatives and henchmen were rounded up, our troops would be pelted with the promised flowers instead of roadside bombs.

When the roundups, trials, and executions failed to fix the problem, the “die-hard” explanation disappeared. A new explanation, with no continuity to the old, took its place.

The new explanation was that Syria was allowing foreigners to cross its border into Iraq to commit jihad against the American troops. This explanation lasted until it became all too clear, despite the propaganda, that the “foreign fighters” were remarkably well accepted by, and concealed within, the Iraqi communities that were suffering all the collateral damage of the conflict.

When it came time for the US to create an Iraqi government, it was evident that it would be one dominated by Shi’ites. Then, for a limited time, it was permissible to recognize that the insurgency was popularly based in the Sunnis.

As the insurgency evolved into what the Iraq Study Group described as a Sunni-Shi’ite civil war with US troops unclear on which side they stood, the Bush Regime and the captive media began blaming Al Qaeda for the escalating violence. Americans were assured by the Ministry of Truth that there wasn’t a civil war, just outsiders stirring up conflict. This enabled Big Brother to deny that there was a civil war and to revive fear of terrorist attacks in the US and UK, the new Oceania.

The Al Qaeda explanation was soon discarded into the memory hole. The explanation implied that Oceania’s invasion of Iraq had greatly expanded the ranks and strength of Al Qaeda, thus contradicting big Brother’s claim that his war in Iraq was making Oceanians safe by stamping out terrorism. The Al Qaeda explanation had to depart for another reason as well. Cheney, Israel, and the neocons, the rulers of the new Oceania, plan to attack Iran, and so the insurgency in Iraq is now being blamed on Iran.

The Ministry of Truth has accommodated the latest explanation, just as it did all others before, without remarking on the funeral of the previous explanation. All of a sudden, a new explanation appears and is repeated until it, too, goes down the memory hole.

The American and British media work the same way as the Ministry of Truth in Oceania. A day arrives when the “truth” no longer serves the empire or hegemonic power or center of moral purpose in the world, or for short, the regime. When that day arrives, a new explanation appears and is repeated until it, too, is discarded down the memory hole.

In recent weeks Americans have been fed a series of reports from official sources that Iran is arming both Iraqi insurgents and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Experts, both within the government and without, who have been made more attentive by the Bush Regime’s false charges of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, have disputed the news reports.

But the reports keep on coming. As I write, the latest story is that the US military “discovered a field of rocket launchers near a US army base south of Baghdad armed with 34 Iranian-made missiles.” Can you imagine? The insurgents went to the trouble of lugging powerful missiles within striking distance of a US base and just left them there unfired to be discovered by the Americans. To further serve Cheney’s plan to attack Iran, the media report states: “Earlier this month, US commanders stepped up the charges [against Iran], claiming that senior leaders of Iran’s special forces and of the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah militia have trained Iraqi fighters and provided other support.” [US finds Iranian rockets aimed at Iraq base, Agence France Presse, July 14,2007]

Notice that none of the explanations fed to Americans over the years have ever mentioned, even as a faint possibility, that the US invasion and occupation of Iraq might be the cause of the violence in Iraq.

Allegedly, the US is a free and open country with a free press and a government accountable to the people. Yet, the information fed to the American people is as thoroughly false as that fed to the citizens of Oceania by Big Brother through the Ministry of Truth in Orwell’s famous novel.

In Orwell’s novel, despite the totalitarian power of the government, nothing happens to people as long as they accept the government’s intrusive monitoring of their lives and do not become interested in truth or facts.. In such a world, truth and individuality pass out of human consciousness and become unimportant. Citizens survive by accepting Big Brother’s ever-changing reality.

This is what the mainstream media in the US and UK are enabling the new Oceania to accomplish. It is pointless to complain about a few Judith Millers here and there at the New York Times, or the obvious warmongers at the Weekly Standard, Fox “News,” and Wall Street Journal editorial page. The entire corporate media is behaving as a Ministry of Truth.

Wise words...

"Strange times are these in which we live when old and young are taught in falsehoods school. And the one man that dares to tell the truth is called at once a lunatic and fool" -- Plato.

"I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward. It is not so desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right" Henry David Thoreau, Civil Disobedience, 1849

"As long as the world shall last there will be wrongs, and if no man objected and no man rebelled, those wrongs would last forever" Clarence Darrow

SLLU CHARTER AIMS AND PRINCIPLES

SLURL TO OUR COFFEE SHOP: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Montserrat/48/18/22
SLURL TO THE TRIBUTE GARDEN: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Isla%20Montevideo/49/220/36

IF YOU ARE BROADLY IN AGREEMENT WITH THESE, PLEASE CONTACT SLUL REVOLUTION TO FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN BE INVOLVED!

OUR CHARTER:

The SLLU seeks creative, non violent means to foster revolutionary social dialogue. We oppose capitalism, as well as racism and sexism as a part of capitalism. Our goal is to develop socialism in order to maximise left activity and thought on SL.

SLLU originated from members of the Scottish SSP, and is now part of a world wide left unity movement in SL. We are a diverse group, united around social justice and anti-capitalism. We are a democratic collective.

AIMS & PRINCIPLES
1 Our name shall be Second Life Left Unity (SLLU)

1.1 The group offers the means of a left environment, the term Unity
does not claim anything since there is no monopoly. It is a proposition.

2 The SLLU stands for the transformation of society. To replace
capitalism with an alternative classless, stateless economic system
based on collaborative democratic ownership and control of the key
sectors of the Second Life (SL) economy. A system based on physical
freedom; artistic freedom and environmental protection rather than
private profit and promotion of Real-Life mass produced corporate
products.

3 The SLLU will provide political support and solidarity to all those
who are involved in fighting back against injustice, whether it be
trade unionists, community organisations, tenants groups, anti
nuclear protesters, animal rights campaigners, anti racist
organisations, feminists, anti-war groups, mental health advocacy
groups, LGBTI rights organisations and other campaigns and protest
movements.

4 The SLLU will oppose discrimination in any form on the basis of
race, religion, language, nationality, sex, sexual orientation, age
or disability - and on SL - species.

5 The SLLU will campaign for a an environment where each individual
user is fundamentally considered to be equal: we stand in
opposition to the divide between digital haves and have nots and seek
a balance between technocratic power and citizen power. Recognising
that in SL sovereignty resides, and ought to reside in the people,
the SL citizens, regardless of membership privileges, as opposed to
the fiefdom of the Lindens and will always seek the citizens' prior
consent to any transfer of powers outside SL.

6 The SLLU actively promotes the international solidarity of the
world community and oppressed to defeat capitalism and imperialism.
While preserving its political and constitutional autonomy the SLLU
will build the closest possible links with peace loving, left
radicals, socialists and left revolutionaries. across SL and the real
world (RL).

7 We oppose the use of violence as a group strategy within SL.
By violence we refer to the use of symbolic RL or fantasy weaponry
and/or the imposing of our will on others by forceful means. Rather,
we are committed to encouraging the empowerment of all individuals,
through education, debate, and consensus.

8 SLLU firmly stand for the bringing of international cooperation and
awareness through education and the discussion of the issues raised
by capitalist hegemony which the RL mainstream media systematically
fail to report. SLLU believe that by avoiding authoritarian teacher-
pupil models of education and based on peoples actual experiences and
continued shared investigation, every human being, no matter how
impoverished or illiterate, can develop a new awareness of self which
will free them to be more than passive objects responding to
uncotrollable change. As Freire said, and SLLU agree, each
individual wins back the right to say his or own word - to name the
world.

Scottish solutions

From Scottish SLLU member, Plot Tracer -

Comments required on sl (to Plot Tracer or here on blog):

I ask SLLU members to make an outright condemnation of the attacks in England and Scotland. People have been reticent in giving views on this.

In my opinion, it is easy. The people who did this are stupid to think the appalling act of killing holiday makers will ease the conditions in Palestine or Iraq by giving the “West” a taste of what has disgustingly happened in those countries because of a terrible and very mistaken foreign policy initiated by Bush and Blair.

Nor will it make those in power in western countries, or those in subjection in UK/US decide to push their governments to ease the situation in the Middle East.

SLLU members should condemn the attempts on the lives of ordinary shoppers/ night clubbers/ travellers. We also acknowledge the fact that these embittered people/organisations would not be attacking us if our so called leaders had not sanctioned attacks on their livelihoods/countries/families.

The solution? – Uk and US out of Iraq! Allow the people of Iraq to come to a solution without US market and political pressure.

Allow the people of the Middle East to govern themselves and allow them to sell/distribute their own oil/resources for the benefit of their own country – which will allow them freedom from the World Bank and IMF – and those organisation's stipulations - ie. what they constitute an “unfettered market”.

UK should support the formation of a Palestine state without Israeli/US/ US political or US market conditions. UK/US should as a first step, stop selling and servicing weapons to countries in the area that have been modelled in their image by their regimes. These countries, rather than imposing a solution via their hand selected emissaries, should allow the peoples to have honest and open talks.

Other SLLU comments welcome on this subject. Im me or place comments on Blog. ALL comments will be placed on the SLLU blog. - http://slleftunity.blogspot.com/
