May and September.

For anyone interested in taking part WDM will be holding a free

School’s out for troops out

Five years on from the invasion of Iraq, Lena de Casparis sounds out the views of some of those who were at school at the time – some who joined the big anti-war protests and some who didn’t

Back in 2003, a sign of the depth of the revulsion at the government’s support for the US war on Iraq was the extraordinary reaction to the war by Britain’s supposedly apathetic and feckless youth. Around the UK, tens of thousands of students walked out of school in protest. In Birmingham over 4,000 school-uniformed protesters took to the streets; in Edinburgh around 300 12-15 year olds tried to occupy the castle; and in Manchester over 400 students sat in the road, peacefully blocking the traffic.

Protests - End the Gaza Siege

AMERICA:
http://answer.pephost.org/site/News2?abbr=ANS_&page=NewsArticle&id=8767

UK:

ENGLAND:

End the Siege on Gaza

International Day of Action

Saturday 26th January

4-6pm

Opposite No10 Downing Street

Withehall, London

And please write to your MP asking them to sign Early Day Motions 305, 624 and 698 on Gaza

On Sunday 20 January, Gaza ’s only power station was forced to shut down, after Israel cut fuel supplies to the Gaza Strip.

Israel has imposed a total closure on the Strip's border crossings, even preventing the delivery of essential humanitarian aid. Over 80 per cent of Gaza ’s population rely on food aid from the United Nations or other agencies. Over 70 Gazans have died as a result of Israel preventing patients with serious medical conditions from accessing treatment outside the Gaza Strip.

This catastrophic cutting of fuel supplies is already seriously affecting hospitals, supplies of fresh water and sewage systems, has removed heating and lighting from 800,000 people, and making it impossible for those few factories which have managed to remain open despite the blockade.

In carrying out these actions, the Israeli government is violating the strict prohibition on collective punishment of a civilian population in the Fourth Geneva Convention.

We are particularly appealing to medical staff to join us in uniform to visibly express their opposition to the medical impact of the blockade.

SCOTLAND:

GLASGOW:
This is still being sorted out, but there is likely to be a protest at the Israeli blockade of Gaza on Friday 25th in George Square, possibly around 7 p.m., watch this space for further details.
EDINBURGH:
URGENT! Gaza in darkness as Israel continues bombing raids

The only power plant in Gaza was shut down yesterday - the inhabitants of Gaza, 1.5 million people, now have no electricity, water or functional medical facilities.

Join the protest:
Wednesday 23 January 2008, 5.30pm at the foot of the Mound, Princes Street, Edinburgh

We calls on all human rights groups and campaigns to join the protest and to end the silence on Israel's genocidal actions against the people of Gaza. Please contact us at campaign@scottishps c.org.uk to confirm your support.

"Death and Darkness in Gaza, People are dying, Help us!

A humanitarian crisis is underway as the Gaza Strip's only power plant began to shut down on Sunday, and the tiny coastal territory entered its third full day without shipments of vital food and fuel supplies due to Israel's punitive sanctions.

The Gaza Strip's power plant has completely shut down on Sunday because it no longer has the fuel needed to keep running. One of the plant's two electricity- generating turbines had already shut down by noon.

This will drastically reduce output to 25 or 30 megawatts, down from the 65 megawatts the plant produces under normal conditions. By Sunday evening the plant will shut down completely, leaving large swaths of the Gaza Strip in darkness.

Omar Kittaneh, the head of the Palestine Energy Authority in Ramallah, confirmed that by tonight, the one remaining operating turbine will be powered down, and the Gaza power plant will no longer be generating any electricity at all.

“We have asked the Israeli government to reverse its decision and to supply fuel to operate the power plant”, Dr. Kittaneh said. “We have talked to the Israeli humanitarian coordination in their Ministry of Energy [National Infrastructure] . We say this is totally Israel’s responsibility, and that reducing the fuel supplies until the plant had to shut down will affect not only the electrical system but the water supply, and the entire infrastructure in Gaza – everything.”

After months of increasingly harsh sanctions, Israel imposed a total closure on the Strip's border crossings, even preventing the delivery of humanitarian aid. The Israeli government says the closure is punishment for an ongoing barrage of Palestinian homemade projectiles fired from the Gaza Strip.

"Famine"

180 fuel stations have shut down after Gaza residents to buy gas for cooking.

A Palestinian economist Hasan Abu Ramadan said the current humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip will be deepened by the blockade on fuel and food supplies. He warned that Gaza Strip could go from a situation of deep poverty to all out famine, disease, and malnutrition.

Abu Ramadan said that more than 80% of the Strip's 1.5 million residents have been surviving with the help of food aid from international organizations such as UNRWA for Palestinian refugees.

International condemnation

Most international actors in the region believe there already is a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, including the UN's Emergency Relief Coordinator, the Undersecretary- general for humanitarian affairs John Holmes, who said at a press conference at UNHQ in New York on Friday that "This kind of action against the people in Gaza cannot be justified, even by those rocket attacks".

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon expressed particular concern, in a statement issued later on Friday through his spokesperson, about the "decision by Israel to close the crossing points in between Gaza and Israel used for the delivery of humanitarian assistance. Such action cuts off the population from much-needed fuel supplies used to pump water and generate electricity to homes and hospitals".

The UN Human Rights Council's Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied territories, John Dugard, also issued a much sharper statement on Friday, saying that Israel must have foreseen the loss of life and injury to many nearby civilians when it targeted the Ministry of Interior building in Gaza City.

This, and the killings of other Palestinians during the week, plus the closures, "raise very serious questions about Israel's respect for international law and its Commitment to the peace process", Dugard said. He said it violates the strict prohibition on collective punishment contained in the Fourth Geneva Convention, and one of the basic principles of international humanitarian law: that military action must distinguish between military targets and civilian targets."

Scottish Socialist Party STATEMENT ON THE ARREST OF TOMMY SHERIDAN

The SSP (Scottish Socialist Party) notes the arrest today of former member Tommy Sheridan.
The Scottish Socialist Party is far more interested in campaigning to improve the lives of working people in Scotland, to end the hated council tax, promote public ownership of our public services, rid this country of nuclear weapons, end the war in Iraq, achieve independence for Scotland and support workers involved in industrial action to defend their jobs, pay and conditions.
Fighting for justice for working people remains our priority.

For us, today that struggle continues.

Dr Aung San Suu Kyi given the Freedom of Glasgow

http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/News/DrSuuKyiFreedomOfCity.htm

The City of Glasgow will give its highest honour - the Freedom of the City - to Dr Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy in Burma, after Lord Provost Bob Winter proposed the distinction at the Council meeting of 1 November.

Dr Suu Kyi has been involved in the struggle for democracy in Burma for decades, and since her return to the country in 1988, she has been under house arrest for many years.

Dr Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 and the European Union’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990. She led the National Democracy League to a landslide election victory in 1990.

Other notable figures to have received this honour include Sir William Burrell, Andrew Carnegie, Marie Curie, Kenny Dalgleish, the Duke of Edinburgh, Sir Alex Ferguson, Lloyd George, David Livingstone, Lord Macfarlane, Nelson Mandela and Jim Watt.

Lord Provost Bob Winter said: "For any who might contend that today’s motion is a mere political gesture, I refer them to the widepread acknowledgement that the Freedom of the City of Glasgow helped Nelson Mandela on his 'Long Walk To Freedom'. And just as Dr Aung San Suu Kyi deserves the Freedom as much as he did, so I hope that in granting her the Freedom of the City, our support may assist in securing her release and the achievement of a free, peaceful and democratic Burma."

The Freedom of the City of Glasgow is something Glasgow City Council is statutorily entitled to award to "persons of distinction or persons who have rendered eminent service to the City".

WHITE RIBBON - call for Second Life campaigners

Go see the White Ribbon Stand on Luna Box sim - http://slurl.com/secondlife/Isla%20Montevideo/185/132/25

The White Ribbon Campaign UK is the UK branch of the global campaign to ensure men take more responsibility for reducing the level of violence against women.

White Ribbon Campaign now exists in Second Life, the virtual existence, as a group.

They are looking for a team to develop and expand their presence there , as well as to design posters, and make and distribute ribbons in Second Life.

If you know of anyone who might want to assist and build their reputation as a virtual campaigner then they can IM inword organser Chris May, and also join the 'White Ribbon' group inworld.

What is the White Ribbon Campaign (WRC)?

The WRC is the largest effort in the world of men working to end men's violence against women. It relies on volunteer support and financial contributions from individuals and organizations.

How did the WRC get started?

In 1991, a handful of men in Canada decided they had a responsibility to urge men to speak out against violence against women. They decided that wearing a white ribbon would be a symbol of men's opposition to men's violence against women. After only six weeks preparation, as many as one hundred thousand men across Canada wore a white ribbon. Many others were drawn into discussion and debate on the issue of men's violence. There are now White Ribbon Campaigns operating in many countries around the world.

ATTACK ON SCOTTISH MEDIA

This is from the Scottish Socialist Party. Union de-recognition is being rolled out faster across the country - faster than Thatcher could have even dreamed of. This is during the tenure of the "Labour Party" - which is now under the leadership of someone who has been selling himself as "left wing" for years and years (Blair never had to "spin" that lie - he likened himself to Thatcher etc)

From Scottish Socialist Party Spokesperson

UNITE

- against terrorism

- against racist attacks

- against war

UNITED AGAINST TERRORISM RALLY

Saturday 2pm George Square, Glasgow.

Comrades,

This has been called in response to the attempted airport atrocity, by a combination of mosques, other faith organisations and supported by trade unions - and us, the SSP.

We condemn the appalling terrorist attack on Glasgow airport – which could have caused murder and mayhem to innocent men, women and kids.

We stand united against such atrocities - which affect all communities.

We condemn those using the excuse to carry out racist attacks on ethnic minorities - the Muslim people of Scotland must not become scapegoats for an atrocity that they have openly and angrily condemned.

We call on the new Scottish government to carry out its election pledges and pressurise Gordon Brown to withdraw troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, as a step towards stabilising Scotland - to help build peace, justice and unity in the community.

Please – if you are in Scotland, and can get to George Square, Glasgow, come show solidarity with the ordinary people who were targeted and with the Muslim people of Scotland who have condemned this action.

Spokesperson,

Scottish Socialist Party

WHAT:
United Against Terror rally
WHEN:
Saturday 7 July, 2pm
WHERE:
George Square, Glasgow

Mosques and Islamic organisations in Glasgow have
called for a rally on Saturdayto demonstrate their
resolve against terrorism. It will take place one
week after the Glasgow Airport attack, with it also
being the second anniversary of the July bombings.

They are inviting everyone who can to take part,
under the title “Scotland United Against Terror.”
Faith leaders, churches, trade unionists and others
in civic society have been invited to attend, while
Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed
she will speak.

Commenting, Osama Saeed, one of the organisers said:

”The incident today in Riddrie [someone backed a
car into an Asian shop and set it on fire]
underscores the need to emphasise community
cohesion at this point.

We have a simple equation facing us. We have
the terrorists on one side, and the rest of
against them on the other - whether they be
Muslim, Christian, people of other faiths or
none. We mustn’t start accusing people of being
terrorists when they plainly aren’t.”

Detectives have launched an investigation after a car was rammed into a shop and then set alight.

The incident happened in the north-eastern part of Glasgow in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

An Asian newsagent's shop in the Riddrie area was left a burned out shell after the attack.

Scottish solutions

From Scottish SLLU member, Plot Tracer -

Comments required on sl (to Plot Tracer or here on blog):

I ask SLLU members to make an outright condemnation of the attacks in England and Scotland. People have been reticent in giving views on this.

In my opinion, it is easy. The people who did this are stupid to think the appalling act of killing holiday makers will ease the conditions in Palestine or Iraq by giving the “West” a taste of what has disgustingly happened in those countries because of a terrible and very mistaken foreign policy initiated by Bush and Blair.

Nor will it make those in power in western countries, or those in subjection in UK/US decide to push their governments to ease the situation in the Middle East.

SLLU members should condemn the attempts on the lives of ordinary shoppers/ night clubbers/ travellers. We also acknowledge the fact that these embittered people/organisations would not be attacking us if our so called leaders had not sanctioned attacks on their livelihoods/countries/families.

The solution? – Uk and US out of Iraq! Allow the people of Iraq to come to a solution without US market and political pressure.

Allow the people of the Middle East to govern themselves and allow them to sell/distribute their own oil/resources for the benefit of their own country – which will allow them freedom from the World Bank and IMF – and those organisation's stipulations - ie. what they constitute an “unfettered market”.

UK should support the formation of a Palestine state without Israeli/US/ US political or US market conditions. UK/US should as a first step, stop selling and servicing weapons to countries in the area that have been modelled in their image by their regimes. These countries, rather than imposing a solution via their hand selected emissaries, should allow the peoples to have honest and open talks.

Other SLLU comments welcome on this subject. Im me or place comments on Blog. ALL comments will be placed on the SLLU blog. - http://slleftunity.blogspot.com/

Scottish Teachers vote to stop Army recruiting in schools:
http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/news/display.var.1459912.0.ban_sought_on_armed_forces_visits_to_schools.php

The SLLU welcome the scottish teaching union, EIS, decision to ban army recruitment from schools.

This despicable practise, in which the army recruitment officers act like the "Child Catcher" in the film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!" centres, enevitably, in those areas devastated by the ruinous policies of Thatcher, Bush, Reagan, Major and Blair. Our poor are dying in the foriegn oil fields in order to fill the pockets of the rich.

STOP THE SLAUGHTER! BRING OUR BOYS HOME!

GELDOF G8 - "BOLLOCKS!"

Even the liberal Blairite fan, Bob Geldof, has called the latest G8 summit "Bollocks" and a sham. He has said of the deal between the leaders of the richest eight nations – all of whom are millionaires - , "This wasn't serious, this was a total farce... I won't have it spun as anything else except a farce."

Come to the Cre8 Garden and help create something worthwhile - a memorial to the past present and future victims of Globalisation/capitalism. And let’s put pressure on our politicians to ensure a fair world for everyone.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Isla%20Montevideo/49/220/36

Capitalism Kills. Come plant a flower (there is one on this notice) at the Cre-8 Anti-G8/Capitalism Garden in memory of all of the victims of this violent world system we live in.

It is an indictment of the current world system that

1. that there are more people in the world in poverty than not

2. there is enough food in the world to feed everyone, yet millions starve and millions die of obesity

3. the gap between the incomes of the richest and poorest countries was about 3 to 1 in 1820 and over 72 to 1 nowadays

4. The amount of food spent on pet food in the US and Europe each year equals the additional amount needed to provide basic food and health care for all the people in poor countries with a sizeable amount left over.

5. WOMEN AND CHILDREN MAKE UP 76% of poor people in the US (institute for women’s policy research 2001) 7. $13billion a year would satisfy the worlds sanitation and food needs (about as much as the people of the US and European Union spend each year on perfume)

6. The 225 richest people in the world have a combined wealth of more than $1 trillion - equal to the annual income of the poorest 47% of the earths population, some 2.5 BILLION people.

7. Former chief economist of the World Bank, Joseph Stiglitz in his book "Making Globalisation Work" admits that globalisation makes some people poorer and that Africa has gotten poorer since the 1980's while wages for the av American family have fallen as the US continues to borrow $2 billion a day from the rest of the world.

8. 42 million Americans live in poverty - 25.3% are American Indians and Alaskan natives; 24.9 % are Black; 21.8% are Hispanics; 11.1% are Asians and 8.3 % are whites - see above for a breakdown on how many are women.

9. A Canadian study shows that the wealthiest nations do not have the healthiest people. instead, it is the countries such as Norway and Cuba with the smallest economic gap between rich and poor.

Capitalism has failed - it is an unsustainable economic model - its central premise of unlimited economic growth is impossible to achieve in a world of finite resources. we are subordinating life to commerce, rather than commerce to life.

We Had Our First Meeting!

After the best attempts of the system, we still managed to have a successful meeting in the SLLU offices on Saturday 2nd December at 1pm SLT.

There were discussions about many things, but conclusions were made.

These were that the “perfect” capitalist system of SL can be, with the will of enough people on the game, completely socialised, that is ran by the people with skills rather than those with money as is the case now; and we, the SLLU can be part of this “revolution” or change.

We discussed a starting point for our revolutions, and it was agreed that we have started well with our premises in Scotland. Our next “baby step” to change is to utilise the skills of people already in our group. Three people with skills such as clothes design, building and scripting are going to make things for a welcome pack which will be in the office for people to access. Anyone with skills such as these who was not able to come to the meeting is asked to perhaps create something for the pack. Suggestions were made of teeshirts and clothes with the logos of world wide socialist and left organisations on them. Other ideas are welcome.

Finances as per Sunday 3rd December 2006 are L$1826 – with L$100 coming off for rent in another two days.

The next meeting will be at 1.00pm slt (9.00pm gmt) Sunday 10th December. Please bring ideas and comradeship!

I will be publishing details of the meeting in full on the blog during the week.

In solidarity
